Jerry Pinto
In a one-bedroom-hall-kitchen in Mahim, Bombay, mother, father, son and daughter are living together. Between Em, the mother, driven frequently to hospital after her failed suicide attempts, and The Big Hoom, the father, trying to hold things together as best he could, they tried to be a family.
The young narrator, who unravels the mysteries of his mother’s life, takes the reader on a journey through Bombay of the last few decades, its socio-cultural quirks, the hilarity of his parents‘ courtship years, their unspoken, enduring love for each other, and the family’s bitter battle of Em’s bipolar disorder.
